Castle Spilber

Spilberk was founded in the mid-13th century as a royal castle for the defence of the kingdom as well as the town. Thanks to its strategic location, it later became an important fortress and has never been conquered. Fom the 17th century, the castle served also as a prison, especially for political prisoners from countries throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a result Spilberk gained the unflattering reputation as the harshest prison of the Habsburg Monarchy.
